Questions

Short answers. For how to do something, step by step, see Help.

Getting started

How long does it take to set up?

An afternoon, most of it deciding what to show. Type the shul's address, choose a template and a look, and connect the TV; the zmanim, Hebrew date and parsha are on the board from the start. Getting started walks through it.

Do I need to know anything about design?

No. Every template comes laid out, in a look that already works, and anything you add finds an empty spot by itself. Change colours and fonts later if you want to.

Can I fix something from my phone?

Yes. On a phone a board opens in Quick edit: its words and times in a list, in board order. Notices and minyanim can be changed there too.

Does it work for a shul outside the US?

Yes. A US shul's zmanim are fetched by its ZIP code; anywhere else, you choose the nearest city from a list.

Zmanim and the calendar

Where do the zmanim come from?

Each shul chooses: Chabad.org's published times for its address, shown exactly as Chabad.org publishes them, or Hebcal's, worked out for the address with every shitah to choose from. On Chabad.org's, a day it hasn't published yet shows Hebcal's times, worked out Chabad.org's way, until it does. See Zmanim.

Can davening times follow the zmanim?

Yes. A minyan can be at a set time or by a zman, like ten minutes before sunset, so Mincha moves through the year by itself.

What about the Hebrew date, the parsha and Daf Yomi?

They're worked out on the TV itself, so they're always there, even with no internet, and so are Sefiras HaOmer and Shabbos Mevarchim. Each can be shown in Hebrew letters or English.

Does it handle Hebrew names?

Yes. Hebrew is set right to left in Hebrew faces. Yahrzeits are kept by the Hebrew date of passing, including Adar in a leap year and a passing after sunset.

The TV

What TV do I need?

Any screen with a web browser: a TV with one built in, or a TV with a small computer or streaming stick plugged in that has one. Open shulboard.app/tv on it and type the code it shows. There's nothing you have to install. The best so far is a Google TV with the free Fully Kiosk Browser app, which keeps the board on the whole screen all day and opens it again after a power cut: see the steps.

What if the internet goes down?

The board stays up. Each TV keeps its board, its photos and about a month of zmanim, and works out the clock and the Hebrew date itself. It catches up when the connection is back.

How do I know a screen is working?

The Screens page says when each one last checked in. A working screen checks in every few minutes, so a TV that's been switched off shows up before anyone calls.

How many screens can I have?

One or up to three, depending on the plan, and one during the free trial. A shul with more, contact us. Each screen can show one board, or take turns between several, with a Shabbos board that takes over from candle lighting until Shabbos ends.

People and calendars

Can several people edit?

Yes, as many as you invite. Owners can do everything, including screens, settings and billing. Editors change boards, notices and photos. See Members, roles and your account.

Does it work with Google Calendar?

Yes. Connect the shul's Google account and Shulboard makes a calendar in it; add events there or in Shulboard, and each shows in the other within a few minutes. Outlook, iCloud and other calendars work through their calendar link. See Calendars.

Can I bring in photos from Google Photos?

Yes. Choose the photos in Google's own picker and they're added to an album. Shulboard only sees the photos you choose.

What if something gets deleted by mistake?

Deleted photos, albums, boards, notices and names wait 30 days in Recently deleted, and can be put back from there.

Trial, paying, cancelling

How does the free trial work?

Every board, item and look, free for 14 days, for 1 screen, with no card. The 14 days start when you connect your first TV. The trial is one per account.

What happens when the trial ends?

Nothing is charged. Editing pauses until someone subscribes, the shul's owners get an email, and the screens turn off three days later. Subscribe and everything comes back as it was.

How much does it cost?

$35 a month for the first screen and $22 for each one after it, so three screens are $79 a month. Paying yearly is about 10% less: $380 a year for the first screen and $240 for each one after it. See Pricing.

Can I cancel?

Any time, from Shul settings, Billing, Manage billing. The subscription runs to the end of the period already paid for.

Who handles the card?

Stripe. Card details go to Stripe and never reach Shulboard.

Privacy

What happens to our information?

It's used to run the shul's boards and nothing else. It isn't sold, and there's no advertising. The privacy policy says what's kept, who helps run Shulboard, and for how long.

Can we delete everything?

Yes, straight away. An owner deletes the shul from Shul settings, which deletes its boards, photos, names and everything else in it. Anyone can delete their own account from Account.
